Three Neptunes players form integral part of Malta junior team

Again players from our club have played a central role in Malta’s participation in the European Under 19 Waterpolo Qualification Group A tournament held at Tal-Qroqq Swimming Complex between the 7th and 11th May.

They were Marc Lanzon, Sean Xerri De Caro and Matteo Cacici who were regularly engaged in the four matches Malta played and also featured amongst the scorers.

Lanzon, scorer of one goal in Malta’s 11-8 win over Great Britain, was an unyielding defender throughout who was always involved in playmaking.

Xerri De Caro’s unobtrusive work-rate and good tactical reading of the game caught the eye. His flicked goal against the Brits capped his excellent contribution for Malta’s junior team.

Left-hander Matteo Cacici, who plays regularly for his Sicilian cadets’ team and occasionally for the senior string, scored three goals, two against Britain and one when the Maltese played the strong Greek team, winners of the tournament. These goals underlined the player’s opportunism.

Neptunes’ other promising players, who were unavailable to represent their country in the May qualification matches were Gabriel Mizzi and Miguel Zammit.

These five Under 19 players as well as the seven in the Under 17 squad make up a strong nucleus of our team’s future.
