National Swimming Championships at National Pool this weekend

The annual National Swimming Championship for 2011 organised the ASA of Malta will be held between Friday 1 July and Sunday 3 July. This Championship will be spread over five days and is the last competition to be held locally for swimming season 2010/11.

The morning sessions on Saturday and Sunday have a warm-up time of 8.00am and competition starts at 9.00am, whilst the three afternoon sessions from Friday to Sunday will have a warm-up time of 4.00pm and races start at 5.00pm. Participating clubs include Neptunes, Sliema, Sirens, IASIS, B’Kara St. Joseph and SWE.

Neptunes, the club with the largest number of swimmers in these Championships, will be under guidance of coaches Gail Rizzo, Monique Mangion and Keith Bartolo. The Neptunes registered swimmers who form part of the ASA squad will be lead by National coach Andy Colburn, fresh from the success in Liechtenstein last month. The Neptunes swimmers have been training hard for this competition and hope achieve more PBs as they have been doing throughout this season which is slowly coming to an end.

Neptunes Swimming Awards Presented during Open Summer Season Party

Last Saturday 25th June, the club presented mementoes to Neptunes swimmers who distinguished themselves during this season. The mementoes, presented by Swimming Headcoach Gail Rizzo were awarded to the following:

• Davina Mangion, Melinda Sue Micallef, Nicola Muscat and Talisa Pace, the women’s Malta relay team for winning a silver medal in GSSE 2011;
• Andrew Chetcuti for winning a silver medal and a bronze medal in GSSE 2011;
• Amy Micallef for winning a silver medal at the Island Games 2011 held in Sicily;
• Neil Muscat won the award given by Gail Rizzo for the swimmer with an outstanding performance this season after having broken 21 age-group records during the period October 2010 to June 2011;
• Michael Umnov who has been swimming for Neptunes for the last seven years and who will be leaving Malta for good in mid-July has been presented with a memento to remind him of the happy times and the many friends he made whilst swimming for Neptunes.
