Lead widened after routine win over Exiles
Exiles 7 Neptunes 14
(1-3, 2-2, 2-5, 2-4)
Following San Giljan’s faltering outing against Sirens in the first match of the afternoon on the 2nd August, Neptunes took their chance to extend their lead at the top of the table over their nearest challengers after seeing off Exiles to the tune of 14 goals to seven.
This deserved victory was rarely in doubt although it matured to reassuring proportions in the latter sessions after a two-goal buffer obtained midway through the match.
The absence, through suspension of our free-scoring centre was hardly missed as coach Sergey Markoch shuffled his pack judiciously when utilising middle order players, Timmy Agius, scorer of a brace, and Andrew Zarb Cousin who also went in when exclusions against us started taking their toll, worked unobtrusively.
However, our established players turned on the screw when it mattered. Steve Camilleri, scorer of a poker of goals, Peter Biros, Clint Mercieca and Michele Stellini, the last mentioned maintaining his unended sequence of goals per match, netted two each, while Niki Lanzon and Jordan Camilleri were also among the scorers with one apiece.
It was another solid match by our boys which should increase our impetus in more demanding clashes.
